Unit Policy
NICU University Hospital Lewisham (UHL) is a Local Neonatal Unit (LNU) caring for babies from 25 weeks gestation.
The unit has a dedicated team of Neonatology Consultants, Neonatal Matron and Specialist trained nurses.
There are twice daily Consultant ward rounds 8am-10am and 5pm (finishing times vary). Parents are encouraged to be present to be with their baby when the doctors see them. Parents will however be asked to leave the nursery in order to maintain confidentiality while doctors speak to other parents about their baby.
The unit has a strict hand hygiene policy and all visitors are expected to adhere to this.
Visiting Hours
The unit operates an open access policy for parents 24hrs a day. Visiting is otherwise restricted to grandparents or four other nominated family members. Children under the age of 16 years are currently not permitted to visit. Children may wait in the visitors’ area but must be supervised at all times.
We ask that visiting after 8pm is for parents only.

Unit Facilities
There is a visitor’s area at the unit entrance. There are also kitchen facilities available to make hot drinks and warm up food. There is a hospital restaurant on the 1st floor open between 8am-8pm. There is also a coffee bar at the Riverside entrance.
We have three parent bedrooms available which are co-located on the unit. These are generally used for parents getting ready to go home with their baby. These bedrooms may be used for other purposes but this is determined on an individual basis and on the availability of the rooms.
There is a cash point facility outside the main entrance to the hospital, close to the accident and emergency department.
The hospital is located near plenty of coffee shops, cafes, restaurants and shops just a short walk from the hospital on the main high street.

Public Transport & Car Parks
There are a number of ways to get to Lewisham Hospital quickly and easily, including by bus, train, car or bike.
By Bus
A number of buses stop outside or close to the hospital, including: 47, 54, 75 (24 hour service), 122, 136, 185, 199, 208, 284, 484, P4, N36 and N47.
By Train
Ladywell Station is a 5-10 minute walk from the hospital. Lewisham, Catford, and Catford Bridge stations are all approximately 1 mile from the hospital.
By Car
Car parking facilities are limited. There is ‘pay on exit’ parking available on hospital grounds and we can offer concessions for parents parking on site.
By Bike
There are a number of covered cycle racks at the hospital. You can also view local cycle routes on the Lewisham Council website.
