Unit Policy
They are a level one neonatal unit commissioned to provide short-term stabilisation of intensive care babies and high dependency and special care to babies of greater than 1kg or greater than 30 weeks gestation.
There is a daily consultant ward round from 9am, Monday to Friday. During the week until 9pm there is a registrar specifically allocated to the neonatal unit. After that time and at weekends the registrar and consultant cover both the neonatal unit and general paediatric ward so the formal ward round time may vary according to patient need.
The nursing team work 13 hour shifts, with handover between 7.30 to 8am and 7.30 to 8pm. Generally, families are not asked to leave the cotside when ward rounds and handovers occur.
They host the King’s Breast Milk Bank and have a full-time Infant Feeding Advisor.
