Unit Policy
All the babies cared for on the neonatal unit are very susceptible to infections and need to be protected. Influenza and other viruses can cause significant problems for sick or vulnerable babies.
The best way to reduce the risk of any infection reaching the neonatal unit, and to prevent the babies catching them, is to limit the number of visitors coming into the neonatal unit.
Parents have unrestricted access to the neonatal unit, but please make sure to read our notices detailing the start-date and content of our winter visiting policy.
Visiting Hours
Parents are welcome to telephone the unit at any time to enquire about your baby’s progress. To maintain patient confidentiality, information cannot be given to other family members or friends.
More detailed discussions with staff about your baby will take place when you visit, rather than on the telephone. Please make sure that we have your correct contact numbers.

Unit Facilities
We have a small number of bedrooms so that parents can stay overnight at the hospital for short periods. Facilities are limited and you must provide your own meals and be able to look after yourself.
The bedrooms are allocated according to individual parents’ needs and the agreed priorities below:
mothers establishing breastfeeding
parents preparing to take their baby home
parents with a very sick baby
Consideration is also given to parents who have to travel a long distance to visit their baby, but a room cannot be guaranteed.
